Project Candy Cane, an Inspiration to Many.

Project Candy Cane, a Mulberry Library service project, inspired many in Mulberry and surrounding areas.
Over 140 patrons and children of Mulberry came together during the month of December to decorate candy canes for those in need over Christmas.
Patrons worked together at the library to decorate the candy canes. Children from the preschools, Just For Kids Phase One and Two also worked diligently to help finish over 200 decorated labels and candy canes getting them ready for Mulberry Community Service Center's food baskets.
Canned goods were given to the needy December 20th at the First United Methodist Church of Mulberry and with them went the decorated candies. Families who otherwise would have gone without on Christmas had the gifting of a nice meal as well as the encouragement from local preschoolers and homeschooled students.
The labels listed the names and ages of those who decorated. The children who participated in Project Candy Cane said they hoped to give the only gift they could, their love, to families who were in need of Christmas dinner.
One patron called the library after receiving her food basket and candy cane expressing her heart-felt thanks for a 4-year-old's candy cane with her sweet words and beautiful artwork. That was all the encouragement we needed to repeat this project next year.

It's that time of year where kids and adults alike dream up all kinds of crazy outfits and go out in public as heroes, maids, dead people, very alive and creepy-crawly bugs, princesses, beasts, cute puppies, scary puppies, the possibilities are endless, the so are the costumes!

Should you like to enter your child's wonderful, one-of-a-kind costume showing off how adorable they are, (It does need to be adorable, and NOT scary) bring them to our Halloween Bash, Monday, October 31st from 3:30-4:30!

We are having a Non-scary costume contest and games galor for the kiddies that will entertain them to their heart's delight! Call the library to register them, 425-3246.

For teens, they are in for a spooky treat with our Spooky Stories event, tomorrow, Thursday, October 27th from 5:30-6:30. A character from a classic scary movie will be telling ghost stories that may or may not have happened.

Tell your teen to come prepared for a great night of edge-of-your-seat fun!

Jiggleman and West Puppets Coming Soon!!!

Attention one and all!! We have some amazing performers coming to perform for the Mulberry Library!!! They both will be performing at the Mulberry Civic Center, 901 NE 5th Street, Mulberry, FL 33860.

To our utter delight, Friday, July 22nd at 10:30 a.m., Jonathon West with West Puppets will be performing a marionette puppet show at the Mulberry Civic Center. We can't wait to see his magic with marionette puppets!

And, coming Wednesday, July 27th at 10:00 a.m., prepare your minds for Jiggleman! He has been on the David Letterman show eight times, so we are thrilled to have his show visit Mulberry (in the Mulberry Civic Center).

Teens Researched 1,347 Books for an AR Project!

Congratulations to our T.A.B. (Teen Advisory Board) members for researching and cataloging 1,347 books in our Children's room in a three-week time period!

The board has taken on the project to research and label AR points and reading levels on all of the children books.

This is a daunting task, but they are up for it! So, much so that they competed against each other in teams to see which team could research the most books.

So in their spare time, they came in to work on this project. And we are ready to announce the winners of their contest!

Branden and Durante won with a dramatic finish when they researched a combined total of 561 books!

Great job to Branden and Durante! But, every member who competed did an incredible job by helping the library reach our goal of completing this project by the end of the summer!

We are hoping to aid the schools in the quest of having students read in and out of school.

By labeling the AR points in our library, kids can check out our books and know immediately the reading level of the book and the potential AR points they can earn at school.

Even though they cannot take the AR tests at our library, we can help them by letting them know what AR books we have. They can then complete the tests at school after reading at home.

If you know of any teens in 9th grade and up who would like to participate in this AR project and earn community service hours by joining the Teen Advisory Board, please contact Sofia Simpson at 425-3246.

Preschool Story Time, Ms. Sofie's Corner

Ms. Sofie's Corner, our preschool story time, meets Wednesdays at 10:30. We have a wonderful time reading stories and singing songs with our puppet friend, Freddie the Frog. Come and join our silliness and other such fun this week.

Also, Ms. Sofie would like to thank the children and parents who are already a part of Ms. Sofie' s Corner. She enjoys every minute of it.

Book Character Day!

We are excited to announce a great event coming up, called Character Day! Tuesday, May 3rd, we are celebrating Children Book Week by hosting a friendly and fun contest.

We invite kids, K-5th grade, to come to the library dressed as their favorite book character. The best costume will win a prize worthy of their creativity.

So, read your favorite books again and become inspired to come dressed to impress!

The event will be Tuesday, May 3rd, from 3:30 to 4:30 in our Childrens Room.

Ms. Sofia, our Children's librarian, has agreed to come dressed in her favorite book character's attire, can you guess who it will be?

Mulberry Library is proud to introduce our new Teen Advisory Board! Made up of local teens, they have made it their mission to help the library bring in fun teen events. Calling themselves, T.A.B., they consider themselves 99% kid and 1% teen.

Please welcome our new awesome members and we look forward to welcoming more. They have been hard at work with our first scheduled event, the Wii Team Extreme.

In this event, teens will be playing against each other in Wii Bowling until every team has been eliminated except for one. That team will be the winner of the event and can claim all bragging rights.

Teens, bring a friend as it is a team event, with two to a team.

Over 1,000 books read in our Reading Contest!

We are very proud to announce these results to our month-long reading contest! What an accomplishment to our young readers who read to their heart's content and more to get in as many tickets as possible. Each book they checked out received one ticket, so when we tallied our tickets, we were thrilled to see over 1,000 books had been read in one month! So, congratulations young readers and we look forward to our next reading contest in the summer! Keep reading!

Love Your Library Video Contest

If you are between the ages of 13-18, the American Library Association is hosting a video contest just for you!

Teen Tech Week!

Next week we are having some special events to celebrate Teen Tech Week, a national campaign to celebrate technology with our teens. We are having an Online Scavenger Hunt which will go on all week. Any teen that finishes and turns in the Hunt by the end of the day Thursday will be entered to win a prize. We will announce the winner on Friday at our Movie Night. We are showing Where the Wild Things Are. This is for all ages. Registration for this will begin at 5pm and the movie will be at 530pm. Also, on Thursday afternoon, March 11th from 3-5pm, we are having a Gaming event. This is strictly for our teens and we are going to be playing Wii Sports.

Is it SPRING yet??

We know you are sick and tired of this cold weather in our usually sunshine-y state. We also know a great way to break those winter blues! Come down to the library and check out everything we have to offer. We've said it before and we'll say it again: We've got hundreds of DVD's, the newest bestsellers, public internet usage, wireless internet, a newly revamped teen room, and a wonderful space for children. A library card is free and you are able to use it at ANY Polk County library location! That's fantastic!

We have some events coming up this month and in March. On February 27th at 11:00am, the annual Belk Fashion Show will be taking place at the American Legion here in Mulberry, Florida. Tickets are $10.00 in advance and you should RSVP by February 20th. Call 425-0644 or 425-2638 if you wish to attend. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Mulberry Library so we hope to see all of our patrons there! One of our own librarians will be walking the runway!

March 2nd is Read Across America Day! So, come down, pick out a book, and celebrate a much loved past time!

March is National Women's History Month. Take time out to learn about famous women in American History and all that they have done for our country and women as a whole. Celebrate their achievements by reading a biography, researching them on the internet, or reading through a reference book. We have several research outlets available at our library and we would be happy to point you the in the right direction!

March 7-13 is Teen Tech Week. We are starting to plan the activities for this now! Some of the fun may include a movie night, an introductory class to a fun photo program, and several other awesome programs for our teens! Keep checking back for more updates!

Valentine's Day, Storytime, and other EXCITING things!

Hello! There are some upcoming events for the Mulberry Library and we wanted to let you know!

On February 5th and 6th, the Friends of the Mulberry Library is hosting its annual BIG Book Sale. It will be on Friday from 9am to 5pm and on Saturday from 9am to 12pm. Come down to the Mulberry Civic Center and support your library by purchasing books at great prices! We have everything available from Bestsellers to Children's titles!

On February 15th, the Friends of the Mulberry Library is sponsoring a Valentine's Brunch to support the Mulberry Library. All proceeds will be donated to the library. The brunch will be held at Grits and Stuff, located in Mulberry. It will be from 6am-10:30am and tickets are $7.50. Pick up your tickets today at the library! Bring your sweetheart and help increase our building fund! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call us at 863 425 3246 any time.

Our assistant librarian, Rhianna, has planned a fun month for her preschool Storytime. For the month of February, these are the following topics covered. Storytime is on Tuesday mornings beginning at 10:30am.

February 9th: Valentine's Day
February 16th: Chinese New Year
February 23rd: Cowboys

If your child is of preschool age, bring them down every Tuesday morning to enjoy a story and craft time!

New Year, New Attitude!

We are kicking off a new decade and our goal in the next ten years is to build a brand new library for the citizens of Mulberry, Florida to enjoy! We are always taking donations to submit toward our goal. We work hard to keep our patrons happy and truly believe that a new library is in the library's future. We have a lot of great ideas for the upcoming year, so stay tuned to hear about our different programs and events. We will be starting to promote our summer program later in the spring and we are very excited about the theme this year!

Now that the holidays are over, you've eaten too much, and you have a billion or so new year's resolutions to uphold, we hope to see you soon! We, of course, have the latest bestsellers and anything that we do not have, we are most likely able to get it for you (as long as your request is available in our county wide system, we can order it for you, to be sent here for pick up!).

Just a reminder that every Tuesday at 10:30am, we host a Preschool Storytime. If your child can sit still through a short story and then a small craft, bring him or her down for some fun! Each week is a different theme!

We know it is a bit belated, but all of us here at Mulberry Library wish you the best of everything in the upcoming year (and a belated Merry Christmas!). We hope to see you and can't wait to set up any new patrons with a library card so they can see what amazing services we have to offer!

If you do not have a current i.d. give us a call and we'll help you find something else that provides proof that you live in Polk County. Series are quite the popular books right now. Stop by to see what series we are expanding and how you can get your hands on them now!

DVD's are also the most in demand right now! We have over 100 on the shelf right now and over 500 in our library system alone. There are thousands in the county system! Why go to Blockbuster when coming here is free!? Don't waste your money!

It has come to this librarian's attention that we have added a HUGE selection of junior fiction/young adult series to our line-up! I just happened to glance at the Publisher's Weekly Top 15 List and realized that we have most of the books listed there. That's amazing and, of course, good for our patrons.

More exciting news!

Time has passed so quickly! I know it's been months and months since anything was posted about our library and we apologize for that. It's been crazy around here. Lots of change! We have a new director; her name is Cheri. She is responsible for changing a lot of things and it's fantastic! We have many goals for 2009 and we plan to do everything possible to achieve those goals.

Lately, we have been adding new series to our Junior Fiction section and to our Young Adult section. If you haven't been by to check out the new Young Adult section, I definitely recommend it! We've done our research and have purchased what we believe to be the most popular in the Young Adult circuit today.

As you can see, we are always trying to make each genre within the library the best it can be. We have expanded our "libros en espanol" section greatly over the past couple of months. Many of our hispanic patrons have taken a large interest in these materials.

It's getting better all the time...

Sheesh, we are getting way behind over here! Our spectacular summer programs are under way and we are busy busy busy! Last Tuesday we opened the summer with our Family Time Story Time here at the library. Our theme this is year is "The Whole Wide World @ My Library", so, in tune with that idea, we learned a little bit about Australia. Wednesday kicked off the teen programming with our local teens learning how to fashion a stress ball from a balloon! Friday brought us over to Purcell Elementary, where, with the Boys and Girls Club, we made didgeredoos and clap sticks. There was also a great story read to the children, among other interesting things.

Also, we have several new books, dvds, and other media items here at the library. Summer is brewing a lot of great things! Come down and look for new books from authors such as James Patterson, Harlan Coben, Jude Devereaux, Janet Evanovich, and many more! We recently purchased brand new dvds, such as, Jumper, The Golden Compass, The Other Boleyn Girl, The Great Debater, and American Gangster! Our Junior Fiction section is the in process of getting an awesome overhaul! We have new books, graphic novels, and are soon going to paint the room to give it a fresh new look!

Are you ready for the holiday weekend? Got all your books to keep you satisfied in this hot hot weather? The library will be closed Saturday, May 24th and Monday, May 26th, 2008 in observance of the holiday. In the upcoming weeks, we are going to be starting a myspace page for the teens in the Mulberry area. So, be sure you are searching for us when you are out there adding friends! There will be a link to this blog. Please comment and let us know what we can do to serve you better! Our ultimate goal is to become as integral a part of the community as possible. We want YOUR feedback! What do you want to see happen at YOUR library???

Mulberry Library's new BLOG!

Hey from Mulberry Library! This will be the place where we update you on the all things book related here in our little town. Also, on all the events we will have taking place. Right now, at this VERY moment, we are working on our Summer Program. Everyone is invited! The different events will be taking place at the Boy's & Girl's Club at Purcell Elementary every Friday at 10a.m. We have several fun and exciting things lined up so far and are working on adding more each day! We are also putting together a Summer Family Storytime, so stayed tuned for our plans for this program.

So, summer is going to start soon, and I'm sure you are wondering, "oh my, what am I going to do for THREE WHOLE MONTHS???" Well, we have some great ideas! Of course one of those ideas is READING! We have new releases, old favorites, and great educational books for the young AND the old. Oh, yeah, AND the in betweens. Below are some of the new books we are offering in several genres here at the library.

We have several new titles in all genres here at the library. We have a book for everyone! We also have several new children's books. Come in to check out our fantastic children's room that has been freshly painted and updated!

What about movies??? We got those too! With your library card, you can get hundreds of new releases! We also carry the old films that everybody loves. Here are just a couple of the movies we just bought to add to our ever growing collection!

Please feel free to come and spend some time with us here at the library. We are always here to help answer any reference questions for you. We also want to mention: we have ten public access computers! Two of our computers are without filters (you must be 18 to use) so that Myspace and any other social networking sites can be accessed. Our computer time is limited to a half hour if there are other patrons waiting. Just stop by the circulation desk to be assigned a computer and you will be surfing the World Wide Web in no time!

Stop by ANYTIME we are open and we would be happy to set up a library account (FREE OF CHARGE!) for you. All you need is a photo i.d. with a current address inside Polk County. If you have an i.d. but it doesn't show your current address, we accept voter registration cards, rental agreements, and utility bills as proof of residency. Of course, please don't hesitate to call us if you have ANY questions regarding obtaining a library membership. Our phone number and address will be listed below!
